Kindergarten to 1st Grade

Kindergarten and 1st Graders are using the First Steps in Music Curriculum. Check back here to see what the students are learning and for a list of songs they can sing!

The First Steps in Music curriculum is designed to prepare children to become musical in three ways:

1) Tuneful - to have tunes in their heads and learn to coordinate their voices to sing those tunes.
2) Beatful - to feel the pulse of music and how that pulse is grouped in either twos or threes.
3) Artful- to be moved by music in the many ways music can elicit an emotional response."

First Steps in Music includes a musical workout in each lesson. Activities include vocal and movement exploration, moving to a beat, practicing simple songs, echo and fragment songs, creating original songs, and listening to songtales.

I encourage you to ask your children about the songs they have learned!

Look below for practice resources!

Practice Your Echo Songs!

Practice making up your own tunes!

Use these guitar accompaniments to make up a tune, just like the birds we use in class.

I Made Music at Home Program

Kindergarteners and 1st graders are encouraged to participate in a program called “I Made Music At Home.”

When students participate in this program, they will get the most special, coveted sticker that reads:
"I am a Woodville Musician... I made music for someone I love!"
What do you and your child need to do to participate in this program?
  1. Encourage your child to share a song, chant, rhyme, or game they have learned in music class.
  2. Fill our this Google Form with the details: I Made Music at Home!
  3. BONUS! Take a video of your child sharing and send it to me at samara.schwartz@wpsk12.org!
  4. Ask your child to show you his or her cool "Woodville Musician" sticker!

Not only will they get an amazingly cool sticker, but you will have made a great musical memory together!
